The University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) Department of Portuguese recently held its Portuguese Language Day, which aimed to increase students’ interest in the Portuguese language and their understanding of Portuguese-speaking countries’ cultures, the public university said in a statement yesterday.
The statement did not say when exactly the event was held.
The annual event was organised by the department’s faculty members and students, the statement noted.
The statement quoted UM Vice Rector Prof. Rui Martins in his opening speech as pointing out the event’s importance for the Community of Portuguese Language Countries and that UM will continue to support the annual activity. Moreover, Department of Portuguese Interim Director Prof. Yao Jingming also underlined the event’s significance and thanked the organisation’s work during his speech.
The ceremony was attended by FAH Associate Dean Li Defeng, faculty members and students, among others.
The event included over 20 student performances such as music, poetry, and a mock debate, as well as a folk dance by the Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre. A “Portuguese glove puppet show” by the centre in conjunction with Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies was also performed, the statement added.
The performers were mostly students from the Department of Portuguese, while students from the local Portuguese School also performed a folk dance that was preceded by traditional “lengalengas and “pregões”, a type of Portuguese rigmaroles and chants, the statement said.
