The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement on Friday that the footbridge on the east side of Praça das Portas do Cerco (關閘廣場) near the Barrier Gate checkpoint will be renovated and the surrounding pavements enhanced starting from today, with the aim of providing pedestrians with more comfortable walking facilities and a better landscape of the area.
According to the statement, the footbridge and the sitting-out area under the footbridge will be temporarily closed during the work.
The statement said that in addition to the footbridge on the east side of Praça das Portas do Cerco, the renovation work will also cover the sitting-out area between the footbridge and Rua dos Hortelãos (菜園路) in Areia Preta, as well as the pavements between Rua da Serenidade (永定街)、Rua da Paz (永安街), and Rua dos Hortelãos.
The statement also said that a greenery project and optimisation of the barrier-free facilities will be carried out to improve the environment of the entire area.
The bureau also said in the statement that due to the need to set up temporary offices and place materials on site to facilitate the work, the sitting-out area between the footbridge and Rua dos Hortelãos will be suspended during the work, but the pavements on both sides of the sitting-out area will remain open.
The statement said that the renovation of the footbridge and the pavement will be carried out simultaneously with a total construction period of about 120 days, of which the pavement resurfacing will be carried out in phases to minimise the impact on the public.
There will also be signs near the footbridge entrances and exits directing pedestrians to the nearest zebra crossings, the statement said, reminding the public to be aware of the construction and stay safe while walking in the area.
