8.6 million NATs conducted in 2021

A total of 8.62 million nucleic acid tests (NATs) for COVID-19 were conducted at local hospitals and primary healthcare establishments last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said yesterday in a statement on last year’s health care data. 

At the end of last year, Macau had a population of 683,200, according to official demographics. 

Last year, 1.37 vaccine doses were administered at local hospitals and primary healthcare establishments, an increase of 246.7 percent year on year. Most of the jabs were inactivated COVID-19 Sinopharm vaccines (803,000 doses) and mRNA COVID-19 BioNTech vaccines (171,000 doses). 

According to the statement, Macau’s four hospitals provided 1,744 inpatient beds last year, an increase of 29 beds year on year. The number of inpatients rose by 7.5 percent to 58,000, while the average hospital stay grew by 0.1 day to 7.7 days. The occupancy rate of inpatient beds increased by 4.5 percentage points to 70.7 percent. 

Hospital outpatient consultations grew by 12.7 percent year on year to 1.96 million. 

Emergency service recipients rose by 13.8 percent to 390,000. 

A total of 19,000 surgical operations were performed last year, up by 5.2 percent. 

At the end of last year, Macau had 724 primary healthcare establishments (public health centres private clinics.). 

Macau had 1,888 doctors and 2,742 nurses at the end of last year, up by 5.5 percent and 6.8 percent respectively, resulting in 2.8 doctors and four nurses per 1,000 population.
