According to Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) President Leong Wai Man, the number of visits to the Macau Museum (MM) has dropped from over 500,000 per year before the pandemic to under 100,000, while the number of visitors to the Macau Museum of Art (MAM) has fallen from up to 300,000 a year to around 200,000 a year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leong talked to reporters yesterday afternoon after the opening ceremony of International Museum Day, themed “Power of Museums”, in Iao Hon Market Park.

Leong said that her bureau has started plans to change its service culture in recent years, adding that the bureau plans to use innovative ways, such as introducing more virtual reality (VR) technologies to local museums, which would enable people all over the world to visit local exhibitions online. Leong said that her bureau was also planning to revamp the Zheng Guanying Memorial Museum at the Mandarin’s House, adding that more new technologies will be added to it. Meanwhile, the project of revamping the Macau Museum – Macau’s city museum – is in progress, with special emphasis on the exhibition areas and equipment.

Meanwhile, asked by the media about recent graffiti on cultural heritage sites, Leong said that her bureau has been raising public awareness of heritage protection through a raft of activities which would be further strengthened.
