Motorcyclist dies in crash with taxi near Barrier Gate

A motorcyclist died yesterday after a crash with a taxi near the Barrier Gate border checkpoint, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement.

According to the statement, the accident occurred at a junction outside the headquarters of the Public Security Police’s Tactical Unit at around 7:15 a.m. yesterday.

When the two vehicles crashed, according to the statement, the taxi was travelling from the Barrier Gate Plaza to Rua da Serenidade (永定街), while the motorcycle was leaving the underpass under the plaza and was about to enter the flyover that connects to the coastal Avenida Norte do Hipódromo (馬場北大馬路).

The statement identified the victim as a 59-year-old local man.

The cabbie, a man in his sixties, passed a breathalyser, the statement said.

The motorcyclist was rushed to the private Kiang Wu Hospital where he was pronounced dead after emergency treatment to save his life had failed, the statement said.

The police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.

The police are asking witnesses to the accident to call its Traffic Department on 28374214.


Car catches fire

Meanwhile, a car caught fire in Estrada de Coelho do Amaral (連勝馬路) yesterday afternoon soon after the driver parked it there, according to statements from the Fire Services Bureau (CB) and the Public Security Police.

The case occurred near the junction with Avenida de Horta e Costa (高士德大馬路).

When PSP officers patrolling the area saw fire coming from the car’s bonnet, they seized two dry-powder fire extinguishers nearby and put the blaze out.

No one was injured from the incident.

According to the statements, firefighters believe that the fire was caused by a short circuit.
