A male mainlander robbed a woman from the mainland of HK$11,000 in cash in a hotel guestroom yesterday after a failed attempt to rape her, Judiciary Police (PJ) Chong Kam Leong announced during a special press conference yesterday.

Chong identified the suspect as a 33-year-old surnamed Shi who told the police that he is unemployed. The victim is a 22-year-old. Both entered Macau on visitor permits.

According to Chong, the victim met Shi in a casino in Zape on Wednesday evening, after which they gambled together.

At around 4 a.m. yesterday, Chong said, Shi gambled away all his money, while the woman felt tired. Therefore, she agreed to go with him to his nearby guestroom

Chong said that after entering the room Shi pushed the victim onto the bed, tore off her skirt and took off her knickers, in an attempt to rape her.

According to Chong, the victim kept resisting, screaming for help. Realising that he was unable to rape her, Shi robbed the victim of HK$11,000 in cash and ran away.

The victim then reported the case to the police. PJ officers went to the guestroom, and saw that Shi’s suitcase was still there, they waited for him assuming that he would return to pick it up, according to Chong.

At around 6 a.m., Chong said, as expected Shi returned to the guestroom and was arrested by PJ officers there.

Under questioning, Shi initially refused to cooperate with the police, but he finally admitted to having attempted to rape the victim and robbing her, Chong said.

After scrutinising the hotel’s CCTV footage and the police forces’ citywide CCTV camera system, PJ officers confirmed that after leaving his guestroom, Shi went to another casino in the district to gamble with the money robbed from the victim, Chong said.

After gambling away the victim’s money, Shi returned to his guestroom, Chong said.

Shi has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further questioning, facing an attempted rape charge and a robbery charge.
