Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a special press conference yesterday at the PJ headquarters that two non-resident workers (NRW) were arrested on Wednesday for collecting a parcel containing controlled substances, such as Methylphenethylamine and tranquillisers, from a country in the Americas, adding that the suspects planned to smuggle the drugs to the mainland.

The male and female suspects surnamed Liu and Huang, aged 29 and 49 respectively, told the police they are hotel employees.

According to Leng, Macau Customs Service and PJ officers recently found a suspicious package containing psychoactive drugs during the checking of parcels from overseas at the customs post in the Inner Harbour, so the Customs Service and Judiciary Police launched a joint operation.

On Wednesday, PJ officers stopped and searched the two suspects in the northern district when they were collecting three parcels from an express pick-up point, and in one of the parcels a total of 35 small boxes of four kinds of controlled drugs, totalling 1,080 pills, were found, Leng said.

According to Leng, both were also picking up two parcels containing a number of luxury goods, including handbags and clothes, at the same time, adding that the two parcels were transferred to the Customs Service for follow-up action.

Under questioning, the two suspects said that they do not take drugs. Huang claimed that she was asked by a mainland friend to collect the parcel and smuggle the drugs to the mainland, while Liu claimed that he was only there to help Huang carry the parcels. However, both admitted that they would have received 350 patacas each if they had successfully smuggled the drugs to the mainland, according to Leng.

Leng said that the Judiciary Police transferred Liu and Huang to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where they face drug trafficking charges.

Evidence seized from the suspects such as 35 boxes of the drugs, two smartphones, a parcel and cash is displayed at the Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters yesterday.
