The Municipal Affairs Bureau said in a statement on Friday that it has received requests for assistance of temporary care for 34 pets since June 19, with some pets having been taken in by their owners’ relatives and friends, while some were temporarily taken to the Municipal Kennel.

The pets, the statement noted, included cats, dogs, hedgehogs, and rabbits. None of the pets showed discomfort or symptoms of COVID-19 after being checked, according to the statement.

The statement pointed out that the bureau will provide temporary care services if members of the public cannot care for their pets due to being infected by COVID-19 or need to go into quarantine, urging them not to leave their pets alone at home due to the circumstances or abandon their pets due to rumours.

The statement said that the bureau will send veterinary and animal care staff to collect the animals and take them to an animal quarantine and inspection area set up at the Municipal Kennel to undergo a health check-up, medical observation and receive basic care upon receiving requests for assistance.

The statement urged owners to speak with friends and relatives in advance about their pets’ care especially someone that their pets are familiar with, while also reducing fear and separation anxiety.

Pet owners admitted to a hospital or in quarantine can call the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre at 2870 0800 or the Civic Service Hotline at 2833 7676 for assistance and the protection of animal welfare.
