Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality announced in a statement yesterday that it has signed a hotel management agreement with the Shanghai West Bund Development (Group) Co. Ltd. to take the MGM brand to the Shanghai West Bund, a Central Activity Zone (CAZ) that has “the core functions of global cities”.

The statement noted that Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality is a joint venture between Diaoyutai State Guesthouse and MGM Resorts International. It currently operates five hotels and three branded residences under various brands in strategic locations throughout the mainland.

The hotel, the statement said, will feature 161 guestrooms and 58 suites, an Italian restaurant, a Chinese fine-dining restaurant featuring Diaoyutai cuisines and a rooftop bar with live music and stunning river views. Meanwhile, the hotel’s spa takes inspiration from its sister operation in Macau and will be among the biggest in Shanghai.

The statement said that MGM Shanghai West Bund is expected to attract luxury travellers and locals through its design, dining options and spa facilities, and will offer Las Vegas-inspired entertainment programmes such as live performances by famous artists and art exhibitions.

CEO and President of MGM Resorts International Bill Hornbuckle was quoted in the statement as saying: “I admire the Group’s vision to develop the largest art zone in Asia and ultimately to help the city transform into an internationally celebrated capital of culture and arts”.

The statement also quoted Hornbuckle as saying: “We will leverage our extensive experience and capabilities in entertainment management, art, exhibitions and sports to help MGM Shanghai West Bund deliver the energetic and exciting atmosphere that MGM is known for around the world”.

Meanwhile, President and Director of Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality Fred Zhou was quoted in the statement as saying: “This is our first MGM city hotel to be opened in mainland China and our second time to hit the market in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in all of China”.

He also noted in the statement that the pivotal signing underlines “our commitment to expand our portfolio and we are confident that MGM Shanghai West Bund will be the most energetic art and entertainment destination in the city”.
