A statement released by the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre on Monday said that the local government, the Health Bureau’s (SSM) Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) in particular, will never require those who are quarantined to pay the hotel fees through WeChat.

Through the statement, the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre refuted rumours claiming that the government was collecting quarantine hotel fees through WeChat.

The statement added that the CDC sometimes communicates with those subject to control measures through social media platforms such as WeChat, where it would ask them about their whereabouts and their rapid antigen test (RAT) results.

Nonetheless, the statement underlined that the authorities will never ask residents to transfer money, remit money, pay fees or disclose financial account information to the government through WeChat.
