The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement yesterday that a subtropical high will continue to bring hot weather around the world, adding that the daytime maximum temperature is expected to rise further for the latter part of this week in Macau with less cloud cover and weaker winds.

The weather station forecasts high temperatures of over 36 degrees Celsius in some areas in Macau.

According to the statement, under the impact brought by the subtropical high, hot weather has lasted for several days in the city, with the highest temperature surpassing 33.6 degrees Celsius between last Monday and yesterday. The statement added that although precipitation occurred last weekend, it did little to alleviate the heat during the daytime.

The statement noted that compared to Macau, most parts of Guangdong province have been even more affected by the heat. The statement added that top temperatures of between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius were recorded in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) over the weekend, with some areas exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Moreover, the statement underlined that under the impact of an extreme heat wave, the Met Office, the United Kingdom’s (UK) national weather service, predicted that the mercury will reach 40 degrees Celsius in the country. The Met Office issued its first ever red extreme heat warning for the country this week.

According to the Met Office, high temperatures were recorded in Europe, such as a temperature of 47 degrees Celsius in Portugal and 38.7 degrees Celsius in the United Kingdom, over the weekend, with wildfires breaking out in many countries, causing scores of deaths, adding that extreme weather is expected to occur more frequently under global warming, the local observatory’s statement noted.

Meanwhile, the local weather station has issued a yellow hot weather alert, meaning “very hot” weather is expected in the next couple of days.

Yellow is the lower of the local observatory’s two-level hot weather waring system. Orange warns the population of “extremely hot” weather.

The observatory forecasts very hot weather today with one or two showers, adding that cloudy weather was expected occasionally throughout the day.
