The Judiciary Police (PJ) urged residents on Saturday in a statement to remain vigilant against raffle scams.

According to the statement, the Judiciary Police have received a number of reports from residents saying that their friends and family members had sent them links to a “home appliances store’s raffle” through online platforms.  The statement said that some residents have participated in the “raffles”, and provided their credit card information to the scammers once they were informed that they had won the raffle.

The statement said that later on the residents discovered that their credit cards were charged without their knowledge on unidentified websites. The statement said the residents immediately contacted their friends and family members who sent them the links, only to discover that their friends and family members’ accounts had been hacked and the links were actually sent to the victims by scammers.

The statement said that several similar fraud cases have been received, and in order to prevent fraud, the police urged residents not to click on links from unknown sources even if they were sent by the people close to them. The statement underlined that residents should always verify the situation by direct contact before they provide their information or transfer money to others.

The statement added that residents should also install and update antivirus software and firewalls regularly to prevent hackers stealing their computer information. Residents should also change their passwords of their online banking and social media platform accounts regularly, the statement said.
