The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement on Monday that more thunderstorms will occur this week, adding that heavy showers will increase in the city, while the hot weather will come to an end.

The statement noted that last month recorded 12 “hot nights” in Macau, in which the night temperature reached 28 degrees Celsius. The statement added that the recent sea surface temperature (SST) of the South China Sea had generally risen to above 32 degrees Celsius last month, while the night temperature of 28 degrees Celsius reached “extreme heat” in terms of land temperature.

After several days of high temperatures and the slight weakening of subtropical high pressure, short-term heavy showers and frequent lightning occurred in Macau last Tuesday, when the weather station issued a Yellow rainstorm warning with the heaviest rainfall in Coloane. The statement noted that 33.8 millimetres of precipitation were recorded at Ka Ho (KH) station on that day.

According to the statement, the subtropical high pressure is gradually receding eastward and weakening, while two tropical cyclones are currently developing in the vicinity of the East China Sea, which, however, will not affect southern China.

The statement pointed out that by the middle of this week, Macau will be affected by a low-pressure area in the north-eastern part of the South China Sea, which was expected to develop and move towards the South China coast. Therefore, the statement added, more showers are expected over Macau, which will bring an end to the very hot weather, according to the observatory.

The statement said that the weather will become unstable with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms when the low-pressure area approaches the Pearl River estuary. Therefore, the bureau urged the public to pay close attention to the latest weather information.

Meanwhile, the weather station forecasts cloudy weather today with occasional showers and a few thunderstorms.
