The Macau government announced today that quarantine-free travel will return for those crossing its border into Zhuhai.

From 6 p.m. today, people leaving Macau for Zhuhai will not be required to undergo seven days of mandatory quarantine if they provide proof of a negative PCR test result obtained within 24 hours.

But the travellers will be restricted to their homes and offices on the mainland, and banned from public transport and gatherings for the first three days.

They will also be required to undergo another PCR test within 48 hours of arriving in Zhuhai.

"Mainland travellers including people from Zhuhai and Guangdong, they can travel to Macau and then go back without quarantine, so you can see that people are very happy," said former Macau legislator and University of Macau associate professor Agnes Lam Iok Fong.

Lam said she was hopeful that the easing of the border restrictions can bring back tourists and revive the economy.

"We have more than 100,000 people who live in Zhuhai, most of them are employees in Macau," she added.

People entering Macau from Zhuhai, meanwhile, will continue to have to submit a negative PCR test result that is no older than 48 hours. Macau's recent COVID-19 outbreak subsided last week.
