Macau's observatory hoisted the Strong Wind Signal No.3 this morning and issued the Blue Storm Surge warning this afternoon.

According to statements by the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), the Strong Wind Signal No.3 was hoisted at 11:30 a.m., while the Blue Storm Surge warning was issued at 2 p.m.

The weather station said that Signal No.3 "will remain in effect during the day". Signal No.3 replaced the Standby Signal No.1, which had been hoisted at 7 p.m. yesterday.

The Blue Storm Surge warning is the lowest of a five-level warning system. Blue means that the observatory expects the sea water level to rise but to stay below 0.50 metre above road level.

Signal No.3 means that under the influence of a tropical cyclone, winds with a sustained speed of 41 to 62 km/h are expected or blowing and the gusts may exceed 110 km/h in Macau.

At 3 p.m., the tropical depression was located about 540 kilometres south-southwest of Macau and moving toward the western coast of Guangdong.

The bureau said that the probability of hoisting the Tropical Cyclone Signal No.8 was "medium to relatively high" in the "late afternoon to evening" today.
