BEIJING – Less than two weeks after Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s sneaky visit to China’s Taiwan region, a group of opportunistic US politicians landed in the island yesterday.
Their move is a sheer political stunt that egregiously violates the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-US joint communiques.
Pelosi’s Taiwan visit has already clearly exposed some Washington politicians’ self-serving nature, and laid bare the US obsession with playing the “Taiwan card” to contain China.
Now these opportunistic US politicians are trying to follow suit. What should be pointed out is that the reason that they came to Taiwan is not because they care about democracy or human rights there. What they are truly concerned about is their political self-interests back in the United States, particularly when the mid-term elections are coming.
Those US politicians who are playing with fire on the Taiwan question should drop their wishful thinking.
It is a global consensus that there is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. In the wake of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, over 170 countries and international organizations have condemned the trip as a serious, reckless and irresponsible provocation and expressed their commitment to the one-China principle.
There is no room for compromise or concessions when it comes to China’s core interests. China will never allow its national sovereignty and territorial integrity to be wantonly trampled upon or undermined.
Any attempt to distort, obscure and hollow out the one-China principle will face China’s resolute objection and end in a complete failure.
Washington should not underestimate Beijing’s strong determination, will and capacity to safeguard its core interests. It must stop its provocative actions as early as possible, and not go further down the wrong and dangerous path. – Xinhua
