The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement that it welcomed over 3,900 new students yesterday during its new academic year’s first day.

According to the statement, applications for undergraduate programmes are up by around 20 per cent from last year, with applications from over 35 countries and regions, an increase of around 34 per cent from last year. There are over 1,900 new students enrolled with students from places such as Macau, the mainland, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs).

The statement said that UM’s Faculty of Health Sciences has launched the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology programme to support the development of the local healthcare industry and to train more professionals in the area.

Meanwhile, postgraduate programme applications increased by 30 percent from last year, with over 2,000 new students enrolled, the statement added. UM also launched three new postgraduate programmes: Master of Science in Global Public Health, Master of Science in Internet of Things, and Master of Science in Cognitive Neuroscience.

The statement said that UM also launched the University of Macau Scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Programmes, with 39 students awarded.

UM Rector Yonghua Song (aka Song Yonghua) gave a welcome speech through video link, noting that UM will support the students in all aspects of their development and create an environment beneficial to their personal growth and academic development, the statement said.

Song was also quoted as saying that he hopes new undergraduate students will further improve their knowledge and learning ability, as well as actively participate in group and social activities. Moreover, he also hopes that new postgraduate students will pursue innovation in their research projects through “taking a problem-oriented approach with interdisciplinary knowledge and methods”, as well as for them to make use of the university’s platforms and resources.

In line with COVID-19 prevention and control measures, all classes will be conducted online until September 17, after which the teaching mode will be determined based of the pandemic’s situation at that time.
