The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) yesterday urged social service facilities and members of the public in a statement yesterday to take precautions against strong winds and severe floods due to the approaching severe tropical storm “Ma-on”.
According to the statement, the bureau urged social service facilities located in low-lying areas to install flood control barriers as soon as possible if they have not yet done so.
Meanwhile, social service facilities and members of the public were also reminded in the statement to pay close attention to the development of Severe Tropical Storm Ma-on and to take precautions including closing doors and windows, and moving non-water proof items to higher places, the statement noted.
All local emergency shelters, the statement pointed out, have enough supplies and manpower. Flood control barriers have also been installed at IAS facilities in low-lying areas, while various storm and flood prevention measures have been enforced.
The bureau also emphasised that people should try to keep young children and the frail at home or in a safe place. The statement added that some nurseries, elderly service facilities and rehabilitation day centres will remain open for those in need, but urged users and their caregivers to be careful when going to and leaving the facilities.
