A 19-year-old local student was arrested for buying a date rape drug from an online shopping site in Southeast Asia, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a regular press conference on Friday.

According to Wikipedia, a date rape drug is a drug that incapacitates another person and renders that person vulnerable to sexual assault, including rape.

Chan said that the male suspect is surnamed Lao.

Chan said that the Judiciary Police were notified by Zhuhai’s Public Security Bureau (PSB) recently that a parcel containing drugs had been sent from Southeast Asia to Macau via Zhuhai.

The Judiciary Police identified Lao as the suspect and put a pickup point in the northern district under surveillance, Chan said, adding that PJ officers intercepted Lao at 2 p.m. on Wednesday when he collected the parcel.

According to Chan, the officers found about 10 millilitres of the date rape drug, gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), in the parcel.

Under questioning, Lao admitted that he had purchased the drug for 850 patacas online for personal use, denying that he planned to to sell it, Chan said.

Chan added that Lao underwent a urine test and tested negative for drugs.

Lao has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a drug trafficking charge, Chan said, adding that at the time of the press conference the Judiciary Police were still investigating where the drug came from.

This undated handout photo provided by the Judiciary Police (PJ) on Friday shows evidence seized from the 19-year-old suspect such as a mobile phone and a 10-millimetre vial of date rape drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB).
