The police said yesterday that 13 sexual harassment cases were reported in the city’s islands during the first eight months of this year, a year-on-year increase of nine cases, or a 225 percent increase.
“Islands” is the official term for Taipa and Coloane including Cotai.
Public Security Police (PSP) and Judiciary Police (PJ) officers made the remarks during a meeting with members of the Taipa and Coloane Community Service Consultative Council yesterday.
The council’s monthly meeting was held at the Seac Pai Van Community Complex in Coloane.
Briefing reporters after yesterday’s closed-door meeting, a member of the government-appointed council, Choi Seng Hon, quoted the police officers as saying that two of the 13 sexual harassment victims were children under the age of 14.
According to Choi, the police officers also said during yesterday’s meeting that some of the sexual harassment cases were committed on victims incapable of resistance, such as inebriated victims.
In addition, the police officers also suggested during the meeting that parents install firewalls in their children’s smartphones to block pornographic and other websites unsuitable for children.
