Two female drivers were arrested separately for drunk-driving and evading responsibilities early Friday morning, one driver also crashed into a road sign which then fell on a passer-by, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said during a regular press conference yesterday.

One of the suspects surnamed Iun is in her thirties and told the police that she’s a clerk.

According to Kam, on Friday at 5:45 a.m. the police received a report about a car crash in Estrada do Reservatório.   At the scene, the police found Iun and her sister standing on the pavement next to a damaged car which had crashed into a concrete step barrier, Kam said, adding that Iun denied she was the driver, while her sister did not answer the police’s questioning, Kam said.

A breathalyser test showed that Iun’s alcohol concentration was 1.57 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood, while her sister who sustained a slight injury on her mouth was taken to a hospital where a blood test, showed her alcohol concentration was 1.72 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

Under furthering questioning later that day, Iun finally admitted that she was the driver and the sisters had been drinking in a club in Zape from 12 a.m. to 5:30 a.m., Kam said. Iun told the police that she was trying to avoid “something” in the road but crashed into the barrier instead, Kam said, adding that the sisters said that they were “too scared” to tell the truth before.

Meanwhile, the other 24-year-old suspect surnamed Xiao is a university student from the mainland.

According to Kam, on Friday at 6:10 a.m. a passer-by reported to the police that five minutes previously a car crashed into a road sign, at the junction of Rua de Londres and Alameda Dr Carlos d’Assumpção, which then fell and hit her. The car drove away immediately, while the she sustained injuries to her head and arm and was taken to a hospital.

Police arrived at the scene and soon found a badly damaged car at a lay-by 100 metres away from the crash site with Xiao and a witness near to it. Xiao was given a breathalyser test and it showed that her alcohol concentration was 0.71 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

Under questioning, Xiao admitted that she had been drinking in a club in Zape from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., after which she crashed into the road sign and parked the car due to a mechanical problem. She did not explain why she fled the scene after the incident.

Xiao and Iun’s cases have been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP). Both face charges of evading responsibilities and dangerous driving. In addition, Iun faces a drunk-driving charge, while Xiao faces a charge of causing bodily harm due to negligence, Kam said.
