Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun told reporters after the Sport Council’s regular closed-door meeting yesterday that in the second half of this year, a number of major sports events, including the Grand Prix and the Macau International Marathon, will take place, adding that this year’s Grand Prix, has been planned for November 17-20.

The government-appointed council held its regular closed-door meeting of the year yesterday afternoon at the Macau East Asian Games Dome in Cotai to introduce the preparations for the National Games, which will take place in Macau in 2025, the large-scale events to be held in the second half of this year, and the discussion on how to help local athletes prepare for next year’s Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Pun pointed out that hopefully the Motorcycle Grand Prix, which was suspended in the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will resume this year. Pun also said that the bureau has contacted overseas riders to take part in races, hoping that the event can be held and attract more tourists to the city.

As for the participation of foreign athletes in international events, Pun said, the bureau will follow the Health Bureau’s (SSM) COVID-19 prevention and control guidelines, noting that athletes coming from low-risk areas, such as those who have stayed in the mainland for more than two weeks, will be exempted from quarantine upon entering Macau from the mainland.

Pun noted that six to seven races were expected to be held in the Grand Prix, adding that the arrangement and details for the Grand Prix will be announced as soon as possible.
