Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) Higher Education Department Chef Carlos Roberto Xavier told reporters yesterday on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the “Macau Historic Map Exhibition” at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Taipa that all colleges and universities in Macau had resumed face-to-face teaching by this week, adding that most mainland students have already started their studies in Macau.
Xavier noted that there are 49,000 university students this year, of whom about 34,000 are non-local students, 32,000 of whom are from the mainland, pointing out that the overall enrolment rate has increased by 4,000 to 5,000 compared with previous years.
When asked about the COVID-19 vaccination rate in colleges and universities in the current academic year, Xavier said, over 90 percent of teachers and students in tertiary education have been vaccinated, among whom have received two doses of vaccine. Xavier noted that the bureau will continue to enhance the communications between his bureau and the Health Bureau (SSM) in the future while calling on the teachers and students who have not been vaccinated to get jabbed as soon as possible.
Moreover, according to Xavier, about 50 local students studying in Taiwan were affected by the recent earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 that occurred in Taitung County. He underlined that the bureau will continue to maintain close communication with the students, schools and associations in Taiwan to proactively provide assistance to students in need.
