Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes told reporters on the sidelines of the “Shandong Tourism Macau Promotion Conference” at MGM in Nape yesterday that her estimate for the number of tourists visiting Macau during the National Day Golden Week from October 1 until October 7 was “relatively conservative” because the nucleic acid test (NAT) validity for visitors to Macau still is 48 hours.

However, Senna Fernandes was quick to add she hoped the number of visitor arrivals will rise steadily during the Golden Week.

Senna Fernandes also predicted that due to the COVID-19 pandemic the number of tourists visiting Macau during the upcoming Golden Week would not increase “sharply”, but that MGTO would continue to do a “good job” in promoting Macau. She pointed out that in view of repeated COVID-19 outbreaks in the mainland and complying with the mainland’s COVID-19 prevention guidelines, MGTO will suspend its offline promotion in all mainland cities, such as the “Macau Week” in Qingdao in Shandong province, underlining that more online promotions would be carried out by MGTO.

Regarding Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) Deputy Director Huang Liuquan saying at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday that the central government would “actively” study and launch a series of measures to support the development of Macau’s tourism industry at the request of the Macau government, Senna Fernandes said that MGTO would “continue to do a good job.”

Meanwhile, the production and coordination services for the 2023 Chinese New Year Float Show are open for tender, Senna Fernandes told reporters, adding that the show would, as usual, be held on the third day of the Lunar Year and the following weekend.

January 22, 2023 is the first day of the Chinese New Year – the Year of the Rabbit.
