UM unveils national science education base

The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement yesterday that its national science education base was unveiled yesterday, with a certificate presentation and plaque unveiling ceremony also held on the same day.

According to the statement, the national science education base’s certificate was presented by Leading Party Members Group of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) Deputy Secretary and National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee member Xu Yanhao to UM Rector Song Yonghua (aka Yonghua Song).

The plaque for the base was then unveiled by Xu, Song, and the head of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), Xu Ting, and Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) Deputy Director Teng Sio Hong, the statement noted.

The statement said that inj his speech, Song said that the university had always attached importance to science education and that it encouraged scientific research and science education’s integration. Song also thanked the central government and CAST for their guidance and recognition of UM’s efforts in science education, as well as various units for their continued support of UM in establishing the base.

Song also said that the university will further integrate its technological and human resources in the future and “leverage opportunities brought by Sino-Lusophone cooperation in science education”. UM, Song added, will also strengthen collaboration with the mainland’s science education platforms and provide more science education services to nurture more science and innovation talent needed for Macau, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the whole nation’s future development.

Meanwhile, Xu said in the statement that UM has achieved “remarkable results in promoting science education and technological innovation” and nurturing students who love the nation and Macau, while reflecting the city’s cultural characteristics.

Xu added that the Chinese Association for Science and Technology cares about and supports UM’s development and hopes it would give “full play to the strength of the science education base”, as well as promote science education’s development to contribute to Macau’s economic diversification and the development of the GBA and the country as a whole.

The Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education was established by UM in 2018 and provides educational and training activities for teachers and students on a regular basis, the statement underlined. The statement added that the base was included in the first batch of 2021-2025 national science education bases by CAST, making UM Macau’s first university to receive the honour.

Several members of the CAST delegation also attended the ceremony.
