The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday that a play titled “Writing in Water” by US-born Taiwanese playwright and theatre director Stan Lai aka Lai Sheng-chuan is slated to be staged on November 25-26 at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Grand Auditorium.

The play, which the statement noted will be performed in Putonghua with English and Chinese subtitles, tells the story of a man returning home after a period of studying overseas. He opens a “happyology” course in the hopes of bringing some “brightness into the lives of gloomy souls” but becomes disappointed by his business partner’s thirst for profit, according to the statement.

The statement said that the play premiered in the aftermath of the global financial crisis in 2008 and was inspired by the ideas of French writer, Buddhist monk and author of The Book of Happiness, Matthieu Ricard.

Lai, the statement underlined, has had two runs at CCM with “Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land” and “The Village”. He started his career in Taiwan and later performed his work in the Chinese-speaking world and to Western audiences.

The statement said that he has created a number of acclaimed plays over his 30-year theatrical venture.  The Macau Cultural Centre will host an open pre-performance talk in Cantonese and Putonghua scheduled on the evening of the second show for Lai to share insights into his work, the statement pointed out.

In line with the government’s pandemic prevention measures, the venue will operate at a 75 percent capacity, while patrons must either present proof of completion of two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before the show, or a negative self-paid nucleic acid test (NAT) issued within the previous 48 hours.

Tickets will be available from Sunday starting from 10 a.m. at CCM’s box office and the Macau Ticketing Network, available at various prices and discounts.
