Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said during a regular press conference on Monday that the suspect of last Thursday’s lovers spat is a Tanzanian woman who burnt two umbrellas outside her Australian boyfriend’s home.
The 27-year-old suspect surnamed Bakari is a student, while her boyfriend is a non-resident worker (NRW). They had been together for around a year.
Chan did not reveal the victim’s age.
According to Chan, the couple had quarreled over trivial matters, and last Thursday when Bakari went back to her boyfriend’s flat in Taipa she found that her boyfriend had locked the metal gate. She then shouted outside the gate and damaged his flat’s electric meter— leading to a blackout, and subsequently burnt two umbrellas that her boyfriend had put outside his flat.
Neighbours reported the case to the police, after which she was taken to a police station for questioning. She denied committing the crimes, but CCTV footage showed that her last entry into the building coincided with the time when the incident happened. Bakari has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing arson and property damage charges, Chan said.
