A local man has been arrested for sexually harassing eight university students, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The 34-year-old suspect surnamed Lao told the police that he’s jobless, adding that he’s neither a staff member nor a student of the university. The eight female victims are university students aged between 18 and 24.

Chan did not identify the university but noted that it isn’t located on the peninsula.

According to Chan, a female student reported to the police on Sunday at 4 p.m. that a male stranger had just touched her chest when she was walking on a pavement on the university campus. Police officers who arrived at the scene immediately contacted university staff and later found that seven more female students had been sexually harassed recently.

Police officers identified the suspect as Lao after scrutinising CCTV footage and gathering descriptions of the suspect from the victims. Lao was arrested at 8 p.m. later that day. He denied committing the crimes, and claimed that he was just “wandering” around the university campus that day.

Lao was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday, facing a sexual harassment charge, Chan said.
