A Vietnamese jobless male overstayer was arrested on Tuesday in the Areia Preta district for selling and taking crystal meth (aka ice), Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said during a special press conference yesterday.

In the operation, Lou said, the police seized 17.78 grammes of ice with an estimated market value of 60,000 patacas found on him and in his flat in Areia Preta.

According to Lou, the 28-year-old suspect, surnamed Nguyen, has been overstaying in Macau since April last year.

Lou noted that the Judiciary Police were tipped off recently that a Vietnamese man was selling drugs in Areia Preta. PJ officers put Nguyen’s flat under surveillance on Tuesday afternoon and intercepted him at about 8 p.m. that day.

Lou pointed out that the officers found two packets of ice weighing 1.2 grammes each on him, adding that the officers later found 16 more packets of ice weighing 16.56 grammes, 2.5 pills of midazolam, drug-taking paraphernalia and some drug-packaging items in his flat.

Under questioning, Nguyen admitted to selling and taking drugs, but refused to reveal where he got the drugs, Lou said, adding that the Judiciary Police believe that Nguyen had been selling drugs for three months.

Lou noted that Nguyen tested positive for drugs.

The Judiciary Police are continuing their investigation in order to trace the origin of the drugs and other people involved in the case, according to Lou.

Nguyen was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing charges of drug abuse, drug trafficking and possession of drug-taking paraphernalia charges, Lou said.
