Three people were arrested for their involvement in fake employment on Wednesday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Cheong Im Sim said at a regular conference yesterday.

The suspects are a male surnamed Chum in his twenties who told the police that he works as a casino dealer; his jobless wife in her thirties surnamed Xu from the mainland; and his wife’s sister, also surnamed Xu and also in her thirties, who told the police she’s a domestic helper.

According to Cheong, during a recent regular inspection on the status of non-resident workers (NRW), PSP officers found the non-resident worker application of Xu, the sister of Chum’s wife, to be employed as a domestic helper by Chum suspicious. The officers discovered that the working period declared by Xu did not match that of her travel record.

Cheong said PSP officers intercepted Xu on Wednesday and arrested the couple in their flat. Under questioning, the trio admitted the fake job arrangement. Chum said that he wanted Xu, his wife’s sister, to take care of his pregnant wife earlier this year and she acquired a local work permit (colloquially known as “blue card”) in June.

After his wife gave birth in July the couple continued to “employ” Xu, even though the wife did not need Xu’s care anymore, so that she could travel to Macau easily with her “blue card”, Cheong said.

The trio insisted that the fake employment did not involve any pecuniary benefits.

Chum and the Xus have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of involvement in the provision of fake employment, according to Cheong.
