A local man reflected sunlight into a dormitory opposite to his home where three female students are living to catch their attention and see him sunbathing naked in the window metal cage of his flat, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Cheong Im Sim said at a regular conference yesterday.
Cheong said that the suspect surnamed Lao is in his sixties and owns a trading company.
According to Cheong, while the three female students were in their dorm in the city centre on October 20 they noticed a flash of light come through the window, after which they saw a naked man, Lao, lying in a metal cage attached to a window of his flat around 10 metres away, reflecting sunlight into their dormitory with a mirror.
The victims were disgusted and frightened and so reported the incident to the police, Cheong said. While investigating the case, police officers also contacted two other female students who had lived nearby last year, who said that they had also witnessed the “repulsive” behaviour and thus moved out.
Lao was arrested on October 20. He told the police that he knew there were female students living opposite him, but claimed that his conduct did not harass the students because he was simply “sunbathing” in his window metal cage to “boost” his health, adding that he had been “sunbathing” since 2007. He did not say why he reflected light into the victims’ dormitory.
Lao has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of exhibitionism, Cheong said.
Metal cages installed in front of residential flats’ windows and balconies are called “fa luhng” (“flower cage”) in Cantonese.
