The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement early this morning that the probability of hoisting Typhoon Signal No.8 was “medium to relatively high” as Severe Tropical Storm “Nalgae” was moving northwards and coming closer Macau, and that it was expected to pass within 100 kilometres southwest of Macau this afternoon.
The statement pointed out that the probability of issuing the Yellow Storm Surge warning tomorrow was “medium”.
The observatory hoisted Tropical Cyclone Signal No.3 and the Blue Storm Surge warning at 3 a.m. and 5 p.m. yesterday respectively, indicating that up to 0.5 metres of flooding will occur in low-lying areas between 00:00 and 5 p.m. today.
Under the joint influence of “Nalgae” and a northeast monsoon, the weather was expected to be cloudy with frequent showers and cooler in the next few days, the statement said, adding that winds may reach Wind Force Level 6 – 7, occasionally 8, with gusts.
According to the government, when Signal No.3 is hoisted between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., classes for kindergarteners, primary and special education school students will be suspended for the whole day. The government added that classes for secondary school students will also be suspended when Signal No.8 is hoisted.
