A male secondary school student was arrested on October 28 for riding his friend’s motorbike without a licence and fleeing the scene after hitting a car parked in Rua de Tomé Pires, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said in a regular press conference on Friday.

According to the spokesperson, the suspect under 18 is surnamed Mak.

The spokesperson said that on October 23, the car owner told the police that he or she had parked his or her car in Rua de Tomé Pires on the evening of October 21 and that he or she found damage marks on the right side of the car when going to get into it the next day, suspecting that the car was damaged by someone.

The spokesperson did not reveal the car owner’s gender.

The Public Security Police identified the motorbike’s owner through their citywide CCTV camera system and summoned him to a police station on October 28 to assist in the investigation, the spokesperson noted, adding that the motorbike’s owner said that he had lent the motorbike to Mak on the night of October 21 when the car was damaged.

Afterwards, the spokesperson pointed out, Mak was also summoned to the police station for questioning where he admitted that he had lost his balance when he went on a “joy ride” on his friend’s motorcycle, and “accidentally” leant into the car parked at the kerb, adding that as it was dark, he couldn’t see any damage on the car, so he left the scene.

The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where Mak faces charges of driving without a licence, hit and run, and causing property damage.

Jobless man nabbed for drunk-driving, crashing into 4 cars: police

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old jobless man was arrested last Monday for drunk driving and crashing into four cars parked in Rua da Praia do Manduco , the PSP spokesperson said on Friday, adding that the driver fled the scene after damaging the cars.

The spokesperson said that the local suspect is surnamed Ng.

According to the spokesperson, the Public Security Police received a report about a traffic accident at the junction of Rua da Praia do Manduco and Travessa da Boa Morte in the early morning of last Monday, involving a car that had crashed into four cars parked at the kerb, after which two men had got out of the car and left the scene on foot.

Traffic police officers found the car abandoned in the road with some damage to its front and body, the spokesperson said, adding that the four cars parked at the kerb were believed to have been damaged by the abandoned vehicle. The spokesperson said that the driver of the car that caused the crashes was not at the scene.

After half an hour, the officers saw two onlookers at the scene wearing clothing and looking like the driver and passenger described in the report, the spokesperson pointed out. It emerged later that both had meanwhile returned to the crash scene.

Under questioning, Ng admitted that he had drunk alcohol with his friends earlier, adding that he then drove to a nearby restaurant to have a late-night snack. Ng claimed that under the influence of alcohol, he hit the four cars parked at the kerb and left the scene with his friend, according to the spokesperson.

The spokesperson said that a breathalyser test detected a concentration of 2.48 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood, indicating drunk driving.

Ng has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of drunk driving, the spokesperson said, adding that Ng also faces charges of dangerous driving and hit and run.
