First-year PhD student Chan Pak Ian from the University of Macau (UM) has received the 13th China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, one of the 89 awardees across the country and the only university student in Macau to win the award this year, the public tertiary education institution said in a statement yesterday.

Chan is a PhD student at UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology’s (FST) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI and the Institute of Microelectronics, the statement noted. He graduated from the FST Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering this year and started his PhD studies in August.

Established in 2004 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the nation’s late reformer Deng Xiaoping’s birth, the award, according to the statement, is the highest one for youth science and technology innovation in the whole nation.

The statement added that the award is organised, reviewed and selected by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, All-China Youth Federation, All-China Students’ Federation and the National Permanent Standing Commission-Young Pioneers of China.

The organisers, the statement said, believe that Chan has attained various academic and creative achievements, “developed a good sense of technological innovation” and has a “huge potential for innovation and growth”. These were shown through his recognition by international institutions that have published his research papers, his research results’ technology transfer, his academic performance and his hard work throughout his undergraduate studies, the statement noted.

Through these, Chan was awarded for his “innovative spirit and ambition to serve the country through science and innovation”, the statement noted.

Chan produced a range of research results during his undergraduate studies with the guidance of FST Associate Professor Lam Chi Seng. He has worked on a project titled “Practical Application of Advanced Controlled New Generation Current Quality Compensation Device” during his undergraduate studies and has authored or co-authored six papers with team members regarding it. Two of the papers were published by international journals in power electronics.

For his final-year undergraduate project, he also developed a “new single-phase hybrid active power compensation device”, which won different awards. He was admitted to UM as a direct PhD student and was awarded the UM PhD Assistantship due to his research and academic achievements.
