A man in his fifties was defrauded out of 74,326 yuan (82,852 patacas) after a “logistics company staff member” told him that he was eligible for a “refund”, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said at a press conference on Monday.
According to Chong, the victim received a call on Friday from a “female staff member” of a “logistics company” claiming that one of his parcels had been damaged, and he could request a “50-pataca-refund”.
Chong noted that the victim followed the instructions of the “staff member” and downloaded an app. The victim then transferred 25,438 yuan and 48,888 yuan to a bank account as per instructions shown in the app. After the transactions, the victim became suspicious when there was no “refund” at all. Finally, he realised that he had been defrauded and reported the case to the police on Saturday.
