Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun told reporters after the Macau Grand Prix yesterday evening that the four-day event had attracted about 76,000 person-times, an increase compared to the previous two years, and that the number had achieved the Macau Grand Prix Organising Committee’s (MGPOC) goals and expectations, adding he was confident that the event would be even better and more ideal in the future.

With a budget of 180 million patacas, Pun pointed out, that the estimated revenue of about 34 million patacas was similar to that of last year.

When asked about the condition of four drivers – Huang Ruohan from the mainland, Lo Sze Ho from Hong Kong, and local racers Zhang Zi An and Wong Chun Hao – who had been rushed to hospital after a serious accident on the final lap of yesterday’s Guia Race, Pun said that all the four racers, who “mostly sustained bruises”, were in good condition, adding that they have been discharged from hospital after undergoing “basic treatment”. Pun also said that two drivers had minor surgery after Saturday’s races, noting that one of them had already been discharged, while the other still needed to be hospitalised for medical observation.

As for a number of racers who reportedly were not able to compete in the Macau Grand Prix due to quarantine, Pun pointed out that “at least five to six” drivers were unable to compete in the races. Since all the drivers and riders did not need to provide their hotel address to the MGPOC, Pun added, the organising committee did not have much “specific information” on whether they stayed at quarantine hotels.

According to Pun, “about three or four” of the racers who failed to compete in the Grand Prix were undergoing quarantine. Pun said the absence of the racers “did not have much of an impact” on the overall event, and he was full of confidence about inviting international racers to compete in Macau next year.

Next year will be the 70th Macau Grand Prix.
