The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement yesterday that it has promoted science education at various secondary schools through the “BOC STEM Talent Challenge” event’s “On-the-Go Project”.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, a broad term used to group together these academic disciplines, according to Wikipedia.

The challenge, according to the statement, is an ongoing event co-organised by the Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education, a national science education base, and the Alumni and Development Office, with sponsorship from the Bank of China (BOC) Macau Branch. The statement noted that it started in September and will continue until June 2023.

The On-the-Go Project held science demonstration activities recently at four local schools, the statement pointed out, altogether attracting over 500 teachers and students from primary and secondary schools.

The statement added that the activities were conducted through UM STEM Car, which the statement said is a vehicle equipped with compact demonstration kits. The project aimed to increase primary and secondary school students’ knowledge of innovative technology, science, and engineering, and their interest in studying STEM subjects through the activities.

The statement said that the team responsible for the project is formed by UM and BOC members and  led by UM’s Centre for Science & Engineering Promotion Director Tam Kam Weng. They conducted science experiments with various technologies such as quadrotor and spectral display at the schools.

Moreover, the team also explained the technologies’ applications in daily life and the theories behind them, the statement underlined.

Aside from the project, the challenge will also feature practical science activities and visits to enterprises, among others.
