An exhibition entitled “Forest Bath” is showcasing over 50 works created using different forms of media such as illustrations, art toys, and sculptures.
Held at Albergue SCM’s A2 Gallery, the exhibition features a character named “Dino”, which was created by local artist Chan Siomeng (陳紹明) in 2016 and further developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a statement from the gallery.
Dino’s journey is set to “explore the unknown world with an adventurous spirit”, starting a new reflection between the environment and nature under the sudden COVID-19 pandemic, the statement said.
The character’s name shares a similiar pronunciation as “mad man” in Cantonese, the statement pointed out, adding that the artist believes that creations should be made with a “madman mindset” and that the creative process should be “unconstrained” and “crazy with power”.
The statement said that the theme “Vision” shows Dino’s latest version and means “looking forward to something”. It also expresses the artist’s two messages, with the first being the human curiosity about everything, which is shown with the character’s gestures, which are akin to exploring something with a telescope or magnifying glass.
The second message is the expectation of new things to come. The statement added that through the artist observing people’s state and emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic, he felt that they were looking forward to, or waiting for something such as luck, a new direction or keeping their jobs.
The artist, according to the statement, co-founded “50% TOY” in 2020, which focuses on art and toys. He has been active in the local cultural and creative industry, being involved in judging, curating and participating in exhibitions, as well as speaking at lectures and forums.
The exhibition runs until December 10. It is open from 12 noon to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. Admission is free.
