Lawmaker-cum-unionist Ella Lei Cheng I slammed the government yesterday for allowing “too many” non-resident workers in Macau.

Speaking to The Macau Post Daily in a phone interview yesterday, Lei said over 90 local cleaners, who had worked at the Grand Lisboa Palace construction site, complained to her on Saturday that they appeared to have been laid off after working for just two or three days.

Lei said some of them had been told to take the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday after which they would be told when to return to work, which the cleaners believed was a lie, while others could not use their staff card to enter the construction site on Saturday. Lei said this appeared to imply that they were sacked without notice.
