Three locals were arrested separately for drunk driving on Saturday and Monday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Leong said that the suspects are two businessmen, surnamed Ip and Chan aged 45 and 64, as well as a 26-year-old saleswoman surnamed Tam.

According to Leong, a resident reported to the police in the wee hours of Saturday that someone had fallen off a motorcycle in Rua de Alves Roçadas and was injured. Police who arrived at the scene found Ip reeking of alcohol and pushing his motorcycle. Under questioning, Ip claimed that he had not ridden the motorcycle but merely pushed it along. He also refused to be taken to hospital.

Police officers later scrutinised their CCTV camera system and discovered that Ip had ridden his motorcycle, Leong said, adding that Ip was found to have an alcohol concentration of 2.17 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood. Ip demanded another breathalyser test, which showed that his alcohol concentration was 2.69 grammes per litre of blood.

In the second incident, Chan’s car ran into the back of a vehicle on Saturday night in Avenida de Lisboa and police found him to have an alcohol concentration of 1.37 grammes per litre of blood.

In the third incident, Tam crashed into a waste collection vehicle early Monday morning in Avenida da Ponte da Amizade where police found her to have an alcohol concentration of 1.32 grammes per litre of blood. Both Chan and Tam admitted drinking alcohol before driving.

Leong underlined that the three suspects, who face drunk driving charges, have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP).
