Macau Health Bureau (SSM) Director Alvis Lo Iek Long said today he expected the city's current COVID-19 wave, following the recent relaxation of novel coronavirus prevention and control measures, to peak "within one or two weeks."

Lo made the forecast in a phone-in programme hosted by public broadcaster TDM's Chinese-language radio station, Ou Mun Tain Toi.

Lo said his prediction was based on the current average of 80 to 100 new cases per day.

According to Lo, 96 new cases were admitted to the Health Bureau's isolation and treatment facilities yesterday. One more person died of COVID-19 yesterday, an 95-year-old woman who had suffered from a raft of chronic diseases. She had been vaccinated three times against the virus. Macau's COVID-19 death toll has risen to 17.

Lo also said that about 10 percent of Macau's health care frontline workers have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus. He acknowledged that the figure was putting pressure on the health sector.

Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) President Hon Wai said on the sidelines of the phone-in programme that about 85 percent of the users of retirement homes have been jabbed against COVID-19.
