Macau's gross gaming revenue (GGR) fell 51.4 percent year on year to 42.19 billion patacas (US$5.26 billion) last year, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announced today.
GGR in 2022 was the lowest since 2003, when it amounted to 30.3 billion patacas, according to Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) data.
Last month's GGR decreased 56.3 percent year on year to 3.48 billion patacas but rose 16.1 percent month on month.
In 2021, Macau's GGR grew 43.7 percent to 86.8 billion patacas. In 2020, the first year that Macau was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, GGR plunged 79.3 percent to 60.4 billion patacas.
In pre-pandemic 2019, GGR dipped 3.4 percent to 292.4 billion patacas.
At the end of the third quarter of last year, according to the latest DICJ statistics, Macau's six rival gaming operators owned a total of 37 casinos. At the end of the first quarter of last year, Macau had 42 casinos.
Macau six gaming operators began today their new, 10-year concessions granted by the government late last year.
At the end of the third quarter of 2022, the gaming sector comprised 5,974 gaming tables and 12,387 gaming machines, according to the latest available DICJ data.
Baccarat is local casinos' most popular game of chance, accounting to 85.8 percent of GGR in the third quarter of 2022.
