Concerning damage to the road surface reported by local media at the first-floor basement bus terminal of the brand-new Barra Transport Hub, which was partially opened to the public last month, the Public Works Bureau (DSOP) said in a statement yesterday that it had arranged for the original project contractor to start removing the damaged material on Wednesday night.
Local media reported the damage earlier this week, which was detected just about a month after the hub had started operating.
With the opening of the transport hub’s ground floor and two basement floors on December 3, its public facilities, comprising a leisure concourse, public carpark and bus terminus started operating that day.
Meanwhile, the Public Works Bureau and the Transport Bureau (DSAT) said in a joint statement on Wednesday that after an on-site inspection, the basic structure of the road was not damaged, adding that according to their preliminary assessment, due to the weakness and the insufficient adhesion of the concrete, the road surface had crumbled and cracked after bearing the weight of the buses and the frictional force involved.
According to the statement, the resurfacing will be arranged in coordination with the Transport Bureau at a later date without affecting traffic and usage.
Meanwhile, yesterday’s statement noted that regarding the work on the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) Barra station, the Public Works Bureau pointed out that while the station is still under construction, some facilities for public use would gradually open, according to the progress of the project.
The statement added that a lift on the ground floor of the station will start operating in a short time so that bus passengers can go directly to the transport hub’s basement floors and the new bus terminus.
