The Economic and Technology Development Bureau (DSEDT) said in a statement last Friday that with the aim of speeding up Macau’s economic recovery while boosting consumption in local neighbourhoods, it has coordinated with five local commercial associations and digital payment companies to launch the “Offers for Visitors’ Consumption in Macau” promotional event starting this coming Friday.

The statement did not say how long the promotion is slated to last.

The event, which will offer promotional discounts to Hong Kong tourists by Macau companies through AlipayHK, is co-hosted by The Industry and Commerce Association of Macau, The Industry and Commerce Federation of Macau Central and Southern District, The Industry and Commerce Association of Macau Northern District, The Industry and Commerce Federation of the Islands of Macau [Taipa and Coloane], The Industry and Commerce Association of Macau ZAPE, Macau Pass and Alipay+, in conjunction with the bureau, according to the statement.

The statement quoted DSEDT External Trade and Economic Cooperation Department Chief Chan Weng Tat as saying that in order to speed up Macau’s economic recovery, the bureau has played a “coordinating role” in encouraging a number of local commercial associations and digital payment companies to organise small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to promote their products and services to target Hong Kong tourists through electronic platforms, helping the SMEs grasp the new trend of e-commerce development and attract Hong Kong residents to travel to and spend in Macau. The event will also run concurrently with the Hong Kong-Macau transport ticket discounts offered by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) to generate “multiple synergetic effects”, Chan added.

The statement also quoted the presidents of the five associations as saying that the event will run in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY) festive activities to produce multiple synergetic effects, enabling tourists to experience the “charm of Macau”, attracting tourists to consume in Macau, and thus encouraging tourists to spend in the city for the second or third time, while injecting more impetus into Macau’s economy, adding they hoped that the event could assist local SMEs in carrying out online promotions, so as to attract more visitors to Macau and thus stimulate local consumption.

Nearly 100 local catering and retail enterprises will participate in the event in offering discounts such as through coupons and packages, the statement noted.

According to a press conference on Friday at the DSEDT headquarters, the first phase will focus on the Hong Kong market and will be expanded to other regions and cities in the future.
