A female jaywalker died after being hit by a public bus near the busy Oriental Pearl roundabout (Rotunda da Amizade) on the peninsula’s north-eastern coast at around midday yesterday, the authorities said.
The woman’s name, age and other identity details were not immediately known as no ID document was found on her.
According to statements from the Fire Services Bureau (CB) and the Public Security Police (PSP), the accident occurred on Avenida da Ponte da Amizade at around 12:30 p.m. yesterday, when the public bus hit the woman when she was jaywalking.
The TCM No. MT3 route bus was travelling to the peninsula from Taipa via Friendship Bridge. The bus hit the woman on Avenida da Ponte da Amizade (the avenue leading to and leaving from the Macau-Taipa Friendship Bridge) near Rotunda da Amizade.
Firemen and paramedics rushed to the scene where they were unable to detect the victim’s heartbeat, and she was not breathing.
According to the statements, the woman sustained head injuries and was bleeding from her nose and mouth.
She was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre where she was pronounced dead at around 2 p.m. after emergency treatment to save her life had failed.
The police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.
TCM statement
TCM said in a statement yesterday that when seeing the woman jaywalking by climbing over water-filled barriers on the avenue, the driver immediately slammed on the brakes hard, but he was unable to stop in time.
The TCM statement said that the bus driver passed a breathalyser test. The statement also underlined that the driver was driving “normally” before and when the accident occurred.
According to the statement, the driver started to work for the company in 2006. The statement also underlined that the driver, who passed his annual physical check-up last year, was in good health.
TCM will fully cooperate with the police in their investigation into the accident’s exact cause, the statement said.
The statement expressed deep condolences and apologies to the bereaved family.
