Macau's jobless rate rises to 3.7 pct in 2022

Macau's general unemployment rate last year stood at 3.7 percent, while local residents' the unemployment rate amounted to 4.8 percent, up by 0.8 and 0.9 percentage points respectively year on year, the Statistics and Census has announced today.

The general unemployment rate comprises local residents and non-resident workers (NRWs). Most NRWs are from the Chinese mainland, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Nepal.

In November 2022, Macau had 154,648 NRWs, according to the latest available data from the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL).

According to a DSEC statement, Macau's total labour force stood at 458,400 in the fourth quarter of last year, including 85,000 who worked in Macau but lived outside the territory, mostly in Zhuhai, according to the Local and non-local employees' median monthly employment earnings fell by 800 patacas to 15,000 patacas (US$1,857) last year, while local resident employees' median monthly employment earnings dropped by 1,000 patacas to 19,000 patacas.

In the fourth quarter, Macau's general unemployment rate stood at 3.5 percent, while local residents' unemployment rate amounted to 4.5 percent, decreasing by 0.5 and 0.7 percentage points respectively from the previous quarter.

At the end of the third quarter of 2022, Macau's population stood at 671,900, according to DSEC data.
