Macau International Airport welcomed over 76,000 passengers during the Chinese New Year from January 22-29 (the first to the eighth day of the Lunar Year), an 80 percent surge compared with the corresponding holiday period last year, Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) said in a statement yesterday.

The statement noted that flight movements increased by 47 percent to 620. There are currently 20 routes connecting Macau to mainland destinations such as Beijing, Changzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Nanning, Nantong, Qingdao and Shanghai.

Other Chinese destinations, the statement said, include Taipei, while Southeast Asian destinations include Bangkok, Hanoi, Seoul, Singapore, and Tokyo.

In January, the statement added, there were 11 airlines operating at the local airport, namely Air Macau, Air China, China Eastern Airlines, EVA Air, Juneyao Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Scoot Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Spring Airlines, Starlux Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines

Meanwhile, other airlines such as Air Asia, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines and Philippine Airlines will resume flights from and to the local airport “very soon”, according to the statement.

The local airport also held a series of CNY-themed activities at its terminal such as handing out “good fortune” bags and festive performances during the period, the statement added.
