A car turned turtled on the Lotus Flower Bridge yesterday evening when it was travelling from Cotai to the Hengqin border checkpoint, causing the driver to be slightly injured, the authorities said.

According to statements from the Fire Services Bureau (CB) and the Public Security Police (PSP), the accident occurred at around 7 p.m. yesterday, when the car crashed into road barriers and then flipped over.

The 29-year-old driver managed to get out of his car unaided, and told paramedics that he was suffering abdominal pain, after which he was taken to hospital for treatment, the statements said.

There were no further updates about his condition as of late last night.

According to the statements, another car on the bridge “was also affected” in the accident. That car’s driver was not injured.

There were no passengers in either car when the accident occurred, the statements said.

Hengqin checkpoint is a Macau-Zhuhai joint checkpoint in Zhuhai’s Hengqin Island, which connects with Cotai via the 1,756-metre-long Lotus Flower Bridge. The Macau-side checkpoint zone of the Hengqin joint checkpoint is administered by the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR). However, only public buses, coaches, and taxis, as well as vehicles with a Guangdong-Macau dual licence plate, and vehicles with a permit to travel within Hengqin, colloquially known as a single licence plate, are currently allowed to use the Lotus Flower Bridge travelling between Cotai and the Hengqin checkpoint’s Macau-administered zone.

According to the statements, the accident caused a traffic jam on the bridge. The traffic situation returned to normal at around 8 p.m.
