The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) announced in a recent statement that it has published a book in Portuguese titled “Memórias, Viagens e Viajantes Franceses por Macau (1609-1900)” by Ivo Carneiro de Sousa, which the bureau translated as “French Memories, Travels and Travellers in Macau (1609-1900)”.
According to the statement, the book is the result of nearly a decade of primary research in central, regional, and private libraries and archives in France. It is divided into four volumes, which publishes and studies a collection of 295 textual memoirs of Macau written between 1609 and 1900.
The memoirs were produced by various authors and editors, which the statement said includes maritime travellers, missionaries, navy doctors, journalists and the “first assumed tourists”.
The statement said that the memoirs also explain facets of Macau’s social and economic life, as well as the “people and the spaces that made Macau an essential territory for France’s access to the great empire in between [China, aka the Middle Kingdom]”.
The statement noted that Carneiro de Sousa is a professor, researcher, historian and director of the Macau-based East-West Institute for Advanced Studies (EWIAS). He is also holds a doctorate in Portuguese Culture (1993) and a degree in History (1999) from the University of Porto.
The statement described the author as a specialist in cultural and religious history regarding the studies of Macau, Timor-Leste (East Timor), and Southeast Asia.
The book, the statement noted, is the seventh volume of the “Farol da Guia” (“Guia Lighthouse”) collection, which aims to study the culture, history and other aspects of Macau. The statement added that the book is also available at https://www.icm.gov.mo/bookshop. Upon placing one’s orders, the statement underlined that Macau-based readers can choose from 13 public libraries in Macau, Taipa and Coloane to pick up their orders.
Those placing their orders from outside of Macau can receive their books through the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau’s (CTT) EMS service.
