Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun told reporters on Sunday that with the aim of attracting more tourists to visit Macau and extending their stay in the city, this year’s Grand Prix was slated to be held on two consecutive weekends, with two week-long events surrounding the annual motor-racing competition “just like the 60th anniversary”, adding that a number of international races were expected to return this year.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Macau Grand Prix.
Pun made the remarks on the sidelines of a public event at the Macau Olympic Sports Centre in Taipa.
Pun described the hosting of the Macau Grand Prix for 70 consecutive years as “a great feat”, pointing out that the teams and drivers overseen the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), an association established on June 20, 1904, to represent the interests of motoring organisations and motor car users, were aware of the upcoming 70th Macau Grand Prix, and they all hoped to attend local races.
Regarding the FIA Formula 3 World Cup, one of Macau’s signature races, which has been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pun said he was confident that this year’s Formula 3 World Cup will return to the Guia Circuit, presenting a higher level of competition for spectators, adding that the bureau had received “positive responses” from overseas racers wanting to compete in the FIA GT World Cup.
The Macau Grand Prix is the world’s only international motor-racing contest that comprises car and motorcycle races.
